The short answer: sometimes, but the exact hotel must approve both guests
An 18-year-old can book and check in only where the exact property accepts an 18-year-old as the primary guest. That still does not answer whether a 17-year-old companion may stay. The hotel can have a separate rule for minors, adult companions, parental permission, registration or supervision.
A reservation confirmation proves that a room was reserved. It does not prove that the arriving guests meet the front-desk rules. Give the property both ages before you pay a nonrefundable rate.
Why an 18+ age rule is not enough
The minimum check-in age answers who may act as the primary arriving guest. A companion rule answers who else may occupy the room and under what conditions. These are separate checks.

A current US chain rule that rejects the pair
Choice Hotels' official FAQ says that when a reservation has two or more guests, at least one occupant must be 21 or older if another occupant is 18 or under. Under that published general rule, an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old do not qualify as a pair because neither guest is 21.
The same FAQ says most Choice hotels require a solo guest to be at least 19, while some require 21. It tells travelers to call the hotel about age restrictions. Do not apply this rule to an unrelated chain, and do not assume an online booking changed it.
An exact 18+ property can still leave the companion question unanswered
Hotel Edison at 228 W 47th Street in New York currently publishes a minimum check-in age of 18 with valid government-issued ID. Its FAQ also publishes a refundable credit-card deposit of $100 per day, capped at $300 per stay.
That page does not state whether an 18-year-old may share the room with an unrelated 17-year-old. The property's 18 minimum is therefore verified, but the companion-minor arrangement remains unknown until the hotel confirms it. This is the key difference between an age match and a complete stay match.
Some hotels may request written permission from a parent or legal guardian. A consent letter does not automatically override a hotel's minimum age, companion or supervision rule.
Ask the property whether it requires its own form, which names and dates must appear, whether a guardian ID copy is required and how the document must be submitted. Use the hotel's secure process. Do not send card numbers, security codes or full ID documents to CheckInAge.
ID, cards and the incidental hold
The 18-year-old may need government-issued photo ID and a physical card in the registered guest's name. A parent paying in advance does not necessarily cover the arrival hold.
An incidental hold is money temporarily reserved on a card for possible extra charges. It reduces available credit or account funds until the hotel and bank release it. Ask for the amount, whether it is per night or per stay, the accepted card types and whether the 17-year-old needs ID.
Use the exact property contact details and replace every bracket.
Hello, I will be 18 on [arrival date] and will be the registered primary guest at [exact hotel name and address]. My companion will be 17, and we are [relationship]. May we both stay for [dates]? Please confirm any parent or guardian consent form, ID, registration or supervision rule. Also confirm the accepted arrival card, cardholder requirement and incidental hold. Could you send the answer in writing before I book?
If the answer is no or unclear
Do not hide the second guest's age or rely on a staff member overlooking it. Choose a property that confirms the complete arrangement, travel with an eligible adult who will remain as required, or use accommodation whose published rules cover both ages.
Read the cancellation deadline before changing an existing booking. If two current official sources disagree, keep the result as a conflict instead of choosing the lower age.
Can an 18-year-old reserve the room online? Often yes, but booking access is not check-in approval. The exact property's arrival rule controls.
Does being legally an adult at 18 automatically make the 17-year-old companion acceptable? No. The hotel may apply a separate minor or companion rule.
Can a parent book and pay? Possibly, where the hotel accepts third-party payment, but both guests still must meet the stay rules.
Is there one US law that gives the same answer at every hotel? This guide does not claim one. It reports hotel policies, which vary by property and arrangement. It is not legal advice.
How we researched this guide
On October 12, 2026, we recorded the US-English organic results for the exact query ‘can an 18 year old book a hotel with a 17 year old’ using Ubersuggest's Google organic SERP dataset. Ads, booking widgets, AI summaries and People Also Ask blocks were excluded. The direct Google browser route returned an unusual-traffic reCAPTCHA, so it was logged as blocked rather than counted as a completed direct-browser review.
We inspected the ten accessible relevant pages in full. Blocked Facebook, Quora, Motel.com and Tripadvisor pages were recorded separately and replaced with the next relevant accessible results or official policy pages. Search results supplied questions and context, not hotel-policy proof.
Material policy facts come from the current official Choice Hotels FAQ and exact Hotel Edison FAQ, both checked October 12, 2026. This was website research, not a phone call, stay or front-desk test.
Directory guidance cannot approve a guest or replace a hotel’s current terms. Match the exact property and confirm unresolved requirements before paying.
These are property rate links, not eligibility approvals. Check each property's age result and confirm photo ID, payment-card and deposit requirements before booking.
Booking links do not confirm check-in eligibility. Confirm age, ID, card and deposit requirements with the hotel.
