Hotel age rules: 18 versus 21
Why nearby hotels and hotels in the same brand can publish different minimum check-in ages, and how to check the exact property.

There is no useful chain-wide shortcut
Minimum ages are commonly shown as property policies. Two hotels sharing a brand may list 18 and 21, so a brand promise should not replace exact-property evidence.
A higher minimum is still useful data
A 21+ listing is not a failed record. It prevents a traveller aged 18 to 20 from mistaking a nearby or similarly named property for a match.
Conditions need their own result
A documented companion, event or group condition should be shown as conditional. It should not be simplified into a green age match.
Rules can change
Use the source-review date and freshness label. For a future trip, confirm again near arrival, especially before a non-refundable booking.
What the reviewed sample shows
Across 1,084 reviewed hotels, 328 list a minimum age of 18 or lower and 755 list 21 or older (70% of the sample). The split differs by chain and by city, which is why a search starts from the exact property. These are counts of CheckInAge’s records, not of every US hotel.

Two ages under one brand
The same chain can list different minimum ages at different addresses. The example below is generated from the current records, so it changes if a hotel is re-reviewed.
Marriott in New York City, NY: in our reviewed records, Courtyard by Marriott New York Manhattan/Times Square West lists a minimum age of 18, while AC Hotel New York Downtown lists 21. Same brand, same city, different rule.
How to use this when planning
Work from the property outward:
- Search by city and enter your age on arrival.
- Open each hotel record and read its official source and review date.
- Treat conditions, conflicts and expired reviews as needing confirmation.
- Ask the property about photo ID, card and deposit before paying.
