Original CheckInAge illustration—not an identity document or proof of hotel approval.
Do not make an expired ID your only check-in plan
Do not assume a hotel will accept an expired driver’s license or state ID. The official examples below require valid identification, but do not publish an expired-ID exception. Ask the exact property what it will accept before you travel or pay a nonrefundable rate.
This guide concerns hotel check-in in the United States. It does not decide whether a document is acceptable for a flight, border crossing or car rental. Acceptance for one purpose does not establish the hotel’s policy.
If you have another current government-issued document, such as a passport, ask whether that specific document meets the hotel’s requirements. A temporary paper ID, renewal receipt or phone photo needs its own confirmation; none is established as a universal substitute here.
What the official hotel sources actually say

Registering guests must present valid government-issued photo identification at check-in.

Its FAQ requires valid government-issued identification; it separately requires a credit or debit card at check-in.
Whether an expired ID, temporary paper document or renewal receipt is accepted.
A page that says “valid ID” without explaining exceptions leaves your expired-document question unresolved. We have not obtained an individual approval from either hotel for a guest using an expired ID. Do not treat a chain policy or this comparison as that approval.
Start with the documents you can actually bring. Describe them accurately to the hotel; do not describe an expired card as current.
Another current ID available: confirm the document type and name match, then bring the accepted original.
Only an expired ID, temporary document or renewal receipt: ask about that exact combination and whether management must approve it.
No clear acceptance: contact the hotel and booking provider about changes or cancellation before the applicable deadline. Do not assume either option is free.
Already at the desk: calmly ask which acceptable document or approved process would resolve the issue. If none is available, discuss the reservation’s next steps rather than relying on a general internet answer.
Decision aid: an unanswered exception remains unconfirmed, not approved.
A message you can copy to the hotel
“I have a reservation at [hotel name and full address] for [arrival date]. My [document type] expired on [date]. I can also bring [current document, temporary document or renewal receipt]. Will you accept that exact combination for check-in? Does a manager need to approve it? Please confirm what originals I must bring and add the arrangement to my reservation. I also need to confirm your minimum age, card and incidental-hold requirements.”
Use the hotel’s official contact details. For a first inquiry, describe the document rather than sending an ID scan or document number. If staff request document submission, ask for their authorized secure process.
Keep the reply, the hotel address, the staff member’s name and the date of the conversation. A request you entered yourself in the booking notes is not a reply approving it. If the answer is ambiguous, clarify it before relying on it.
Payment, age and identification are separate checks
A paid reservation does not establish that your document is accepted. Likewise, meeting the minimum age does not answer the ID or card question. Confirm all three for the person who will register at the desk.
Do not assume loyalty membership, an app check-in option or someone else’s payment waives identification. The sources reviewed here do not establish those as expired-ID exceptions.
If another adult will register instead, ask the hotel and booking provider to confirm the permitted reservation arrangement, guest names and payment requirements. Do not simply use another person’s identification.
Use this checklist to avoid turning a possible alternative into a promised exception.
Questions for your exact property
What you have
What to ask
Expired license plus a current passport
Will you accept this passport for the registered guest, and must I bring the original?
Expired license plus temporary paper ID
Is this exact document combination accepted, or is a different current ID required?
A phone photo of an ID
Is the physical original required? A photo is not confirmed as a substitute.
A prepaid or third-party reservation
Who can authorize a change, and what deadline and charges apply if I cannot meet check-in requirements?
A verbal “should be fine”
Can you confirm the specific documents, any manager approval and a note on the reservation?
Check the exact property, not just the brand
Match the hotel’s full address before contacting it. Read the official source and its evidence date on the property page. An unknown ID exception stays unknown until the property answers it; an age match or booking link is not confirmation of the exception.
Directory guidance cannot approve a guest or replace a hotel’s current terms. Match the exact property and confirm unresolved requirements before paying.
These are property rate links, not eligibility approvals. Check each property's age result and confirm photo ID, payment-card and deposit requirements before booking.
Booking links do not confirm check-in eligibility. Confirm age, ID, card and deposit requirements with the hotel.
Choose dates and occupancy on Expedia or Booking.com. CheckInAge does not display live room prices or availability. Affiliate links do not change policy results or the order of these properties.
