Hotel Pet Policies: Fees, Weight Limits and Service Animals

Pet-friendly is the beginning of the check

A hotel allowing pets may still restrict the species, number, weight, rooms or dates. Check the exact address and the full terms before booking. A chain-level pet-friendly label does not establish the rules at its individual hotels.

Keep a per-stay fee separate from a per-night fee. Ask whether the charge applies per pet or per room, whether tax is additional and whether a refundable damage deposit is also required.

• Give the hotel the number, species and weight of your animals.
• Ask whether an approved pet room is available for your dates.
• Confirm any stay-length surcharge, cleaning charge or maximum total.
• Check supervision, unattended-pet and public-area restrictions.
• Keep the hotel’s written reply with the reservation.

Service animals are a separate question

U.S. Department of Justice guidance says that qualifying service animals are not pets. Ordinary hotel pet fees do not apply to them, although the hotel may charge for damage under its usual rules. Emotional-support animals do not qualify as service animals solely because they provide comfort.

A “pets not allowed” result describes ordinary pets; it does not decide a traveler’s service-animal access. Consult the official ADA guidance for definitions, permitted questions and exceptions.

How to use the pet filter

Select “Pets allowed” and, if relevant, enter your pet’s weight in pounds. A missing weight limit remains unknown. It is not treated as unlimited. Including unknown answers broadens the search and requires you to confirm those details directly.
